Anegudde Vinayaka Temple, Khumbasi

Considered as one of the seven “Mukti” stalas” of Karanataka, Anegudde is the holy abode of the elephant headed God, Lord Ganesha.  Derived from the words “Aane” meaning elephant and “Gudde” meaning hillock, the temple is situated 9 km from the town of Kundapur in Udupi district.  Legend has it that the demon Kumbahsura was killed by Bheemasena in this place after the latter got a weapon from Lord Ganesha.  As the area was drought-hit, the sages undertook a penance to appease the rain Gods but this was being disrupted by Khumbahsaura who was ultimately defeated in his purpose.  Hence, the place is known as Khumbahsi.

A popular pilgrimage center, the place attracts crowds in large numbers and the “Mudi Akki Kadubu” (steamed rice dumplings) is considered a sacred offering to the Lord.   Visit the temple website for more details.

The nearest town is Kundapur which is a quaint coastal town a little less than 40 km from Udupi.  While there is nothing much to do in the town from a ‘conventional tourist’ point of view, the beach is a great place to unwind in the evening.

We were lucky to spot numerous peacocks enroute to the beach. Our driver told us that these birds roam freely and unharmed in the area and are found in huge numbers.

Visit the town market to experience the pulse of the locals and do not forget to sample the delicious “goli bajji” which is one of the most popular snacks in the South Canara region.
